KKGO-FM “GO Country” in Los Angeles Becomes Flagship Affiliate
New York, NY – November 21, 2008 -- United Stations Radio Networks, Inc., (USRN), an independent leader in the creation and marketing of network radio programming, announced today that Country Radio Legend Charlie Cook will take over host duties on the network’s long-running live music show, The Road. While best known as a broadcast executive, Charlie Cook has also anchored award-winning broadcasts, and earned accolades including Billboard Air Personality of the Year as well as being a CMA Air Personality of the Year finalist. Most recently, Cook was appointed Senior Manager of Country Programming for KKGO, also known as “GO Country,” in Los Angeles. Cook’s hosting duties begin with the broadcast week of December 8, 2008, and the announcement came from USRN’s EVP/Programming, Andy Denemark in New York.
The Road is a two-hour weekly live music series featuring original concert material recorded coast to coast by a team of talent acquisition executives and recording engineers working for United Stations. Over the years, The Road had presented concert recordings from the biggest names in Country music, including George Strait, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Vince Gill, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride and Taylor Swift. The Road is now in its sixteenth year on the air, and KKGO marks the newest addition to the program’s lineup of great radio affiliates coast to coast.
Charlie Cook is one of the most respected broadcasters in all of radio, but he is especially revered in the Country format, a field in which he has been active for over 35 years. While his talent on the air has been honored, Country radio programming has been his passion. Cook held down key programming positions in New York, in Los Angeles and at the Westwood One Radio Network, where he was in charge of all of their Country Programming. He recently served as VP/Programming for the 52 Country Stations owned by Cumulus Broadcasting. In January, 2008, Cook rejoined McVay Media, and his duties there included consulting KKGO prior to joining to the staff there full time. Charlie Cook’s other accomplishments in Country Radio include his 25-year service on the Country Radio Broadcasters Board of Directors, where he also served one term as its president. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of both The Country Music Association and The Academy of Country Music. Just last year, Country Aircheck Magazine named Charlie the third most influential person (and top radio person) in Country Music Airplay.
In announcing Cook as the new host, USRN’s Denemark commented, “We love having hosts on our shows who bring their own personal notoriety to the airwaves, and in the Country Music world, Charlie Cook needs no introduction. The Road has a fantastic behind-the-scenes staff with Richard Kimball, Stephanie Voso and Dave Kaufman working on the live recordings and program compilation each week. Now with Charlie, we’ve added the top guy in the business in front of the microphone. It doesn’t get better than that!”
